“Yes, Angel Locsin, is indeed a living Darna,” Darna turns 70 and this is what Mars Ravelo’s eldest grandchild says about Angel.
Last May 13, the Filipina comic super-heroine ‘Darna’ created by the “King of Philippine Komiks” Mars Ravelo turned 70!
Through the decades, the most popular Filipino superhero has appeared in prints, films and several television series and has been widely considered as a Filipino cultural icon and the most celebrated superhero character in the country. And even without continued print and screen presence, Darna’s popularity speaks of the character’s significance.
To commemorate its 70th anniversary this year, the Ravelos launched “Darna: A Celebration of 70 Years” event, the start of which can be seen on its official Facebook page and The Inquirer Entertainment wrote a whole article that tells everything you need to know about the comic superhero. What strikes the most is its significance which in time of crisis, becomes a source of inspiration.
In the time of COVID-19, the charitable works and other acts of philanthropy of Angel Locsin who portrayed her in its TV adaptation in 2005 has Filipinos thinking of her as a real-life version of Darna. In fact, Mars Ravelo’s eldest grandchild Mara Ravelo Austria Bernaldo is one of them saying, “Yes, Angel Locsin, is indeed a living Darna. Her efforts to better our society are admirable and truly heroic. The Ravelo family salutes Ms Angel and all the front-liners.”
Long live Darna!
